Job Summary

Position is Contingent pending contract award.

AECOM has a contingent opening for Hazardous Waste Technician in Okinawa, Japan.

The Hazardous Waste Technician shall perform collecting, receiving, handling, transporting, processing, packaging and preparing hazardous material and hazardous waste for storage and shipment. Duties involve one or more of the following: manually loading or unloading trucks or other transporting devices; unpacking, shelving, or placing items in proper storage locations; or transporting goods by hand truck, cart, or pallet jack or forklift, applying labels to individual items, manually separating removable components and destroying items to be recycled. Works in a warehouse setting and is involved in handling hazardous materials that may be flammable, caustic, toxic and/or explosive.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Retrieves hazardous waste (HW) from customer accumulation points (HWAPS). Manifests and documents generator, weight, waste stream, etc. Ensures waste streams are properly segregated prior to transport.

  • Ensures HW containers returned to the HWSA does not have mixed HW streams, is properly identified with pickup origin, waste information, dates, categories, and type of waste.

  • Processes HW returned from customer HWAPs, includes aerosol can punching, purging and recycling fire extinguishers, emptying and draining oil containers, sorts light bulbs, sorts batteries by type.

  • Prepares HW containers for closeout by the HW supervisor; marks, labels, verifies contents and container details/numbers, weight and dates.

  • Provides updates for the HW log to management, verifies and inventories HW containers are in documented locations.

  • Manage and maintain HW in storage to ensure proper container markings and labeling, and container details are accurate.

  • Identify HW requiring laboratory testing to determine substance.

  • Locates and stages HW containers for relinquishing to Disposition Services.

  • Transports and stages HW containers 24 hours in advance of pickup.

  • Zero Out in HMMS when HM container is returned empty.

  • Perform all other position related duties as assigned or requested.

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:

Ability to lift and carry loads of various weights and dimensions and ability to walk and stand for prolonged periods when working with hazardous waste. Ability to operate a forklift up to 10,000 pounds.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Must be a United States Citizen or acceptable proof of naturalization prior to employment.

  2. High school graduate or equivalent.

  3. Post high school training in hazardous material/waste handling and safety procedures.

  4. Two (2) years experience working in a federal / state or industry hazardous waste disposal operation. Working knowledge of hazardous waste and/or material handling techniques, applicable local, state and federal regulations and federal supply procedures.

  5. Must possess a valid state driver’s license.

  6. Ability to successfully complete related training mandated by the Company and contract.

  7. Must meet security clearance requirements.

  8. This position has a rotating shift and will be subject to shift changes, weekend, holiday and overtime work.

  9. Shift work, weekends, mandatory overtime (with proper notice given) and cross-training can be required in order to meet daily/weekly workload requirements.
